Why Should You Get Involved with NICE?

A Letter from the Outgoing NICE Board President Dave Weinstein

For the past 3 years, I've served on the Board of Neighbors Investing in Childs Elementary (NICE) and I'm so glad I have. As a general member, a vice president, and this past year as president of the Board, I've had exactly the experience I was hoping for: an opportunity to work alongside members of my community in support of our local school.

I moved to Point Breeze 3 and a half years ago. I was new to South Philly, but not to the city or its education system. When I heard about NICE, I came to a few meetings to start getting involved and ultimately ended up applying to and joining the board. I didn't really know how I could help. The group seemed pretty successful already and I was just trying to get involved and do whatever I could. I'm so glad I got past that initial feeling of awkwardness and imposter syndrome that led me to think I couldn't be a useful member of the team.

In my past 3 years on the Board, we've been able to do so much in partnership with the school.

  • We finished fundraising for Project Recess and are getting set to break ground on a rooftop playground for the school

  • We launched a new campaign and started raising funds that will lead to the upgrade of the auditorium into a state-of-the-art performing space.

  • We've held numerous events that connect the fabric of our community - Halloween parades, bake sales, cleanups, fundraisers, you name it

I'm definitely going to remember the accomplishments our group has had over the past 3 years, but more so I'm going to remember the people. When I go to the store, or out to dinner, or take my daughter to the playground, I know more people in my community because I chose to get involved with NICE. To me, that's invaluable, even if it's not why I joined NICE to begin with.

This will be my last year on the board, at least for now. I have some new challenges to tackle in my professional life next year and baby #2 is on the way - it's time for me to take a temporary step back. I hope if you've read this, it's time for you to take a step up. NICE needs new people to join the board every year, and I hope this is the right year for you. While I won't be the president any longer, I will be here as a community supporter.

- Dave Weinstein
2021-2022 NICE Board President

Announcing Phase II: Auditorium Revitalization Project

Childs_Auditorium-1305.jpg

Today, we are excited to announce the launch of Phase II of our Auditorium Revitalization Project to refurbish and revitalize the historic auditorium at GW Childs Elementary School and bring a state of the art performance & programming space to the school & community.

Phase I, completed in 2016, replaced the projector, projector screen, and repaired broken seating throughout the auditorium. In Phase II, we will be working with the NICE community to bring a new sound system and lighting to the auditorium. This project will continue to enhance this space and unlock the potential of this space for student engagement, performance, and learning.

We are excited to embark on this project with the school community and our community of neighbors & friends. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting project!

"What Is Your Life's Blueprint?"

Did you know that on October 26, 1967, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. spoke in the GW Childs Auditorium? On that date, he gave a speech titled "What Is Your Life’s Blueprint?" to the students of Barratt Junior High School which previously occupied the building that is now GW Childs Elementary School.

A NICE Night 2020 Recap & Project Recess Update

NICE Night 2020

To our NICE Community:

Last week, we were honestly not sure whether to move forward with A NICE Night. The effects of COVID-19 have been far reaching and we thought deeply about where our work fits into the larger context of the national movement against systemic racism. We knew we had a lofty goal for our small organization and knew we needed to continue to do all we could to support the G.W. Childs community and students.

This community stepped up to show how much our local public schools matter and thanks to your incredible support, A NICE Night - only in its 3rd year - raised over $18,000! This is more than we have ever raised!  We met and exceeded our goal thanks to you.

We are overwhelmed with gratitude.

But it is not just about the money raised.  Above all, we are deeply grateful for how this community came together during a time of uncertainty to support the wonderful students at G.W. Childs.

A NICE Night was also possible thanks to the generous support of local businesses through sponsorship and auction item donations. Please consider supporting our sponsors, who have made a commitment to supporting G.W. Childs.

Finally, we are so grateful to everyone who bid, donated, or purchased tickets.  Thanks to you, NICE will be able to complete Project Recess and offer additional support to G.W. Childs during a time when support is most needed.

At NICE, our goal is to complement the existing efforts of the school to ensure exceptional learning spaces and resources for the students at G.W. Childs.  We sincerely thank you for supporting NICE and the G.W. Childs community in helping us make this goal a reality.

NICE Neighbor Award presented to Dr. Eileen Coutts
The NICE Neighbor award is given annually to someone who has shown long-term dedication to helping make G.W. Childs a thriving neighborhood school. This year's recipient was Dr. Eileen Coutts, who is retiring this year after 30 years of service in the Philadelphia School District and 8 years at G.W. Childs. We were honored to present this award to Dr. Coutts live during A NICE Night this past Saturday.

A Statement from the Neighbors Investing in Childs Elementary Board

June 3, 2020

A statement from the Neighbors Investing in Childs Elementary Board

N.I.C.E. stands in solidarity with those calling for justice for the countless victims of racial violence, injustice, and brutality in our community and communities across the country.

As an organization we believe it is crucial to be vocally anti-racist and an unambiguous and visible ally if we have any hope of achieving our mission.

Students cannot thrive in a racist society where they have to fear for their lives every day.

Our student's lives matter.

Black Lives Matter.

Have you heard about the Comprehensive School Planning Review?
The CSPR is a collaborative process that will assess the Philadelphia School District's neighborhood enrollment, school facilities, and educational program offerings. This process will have a significant impact on South Philadelphia students - catchment boundaries may be redrawn, and other major changes such as the creation of a centralized middle school are also under consideration.

There will be two rounds of community input forums in each study area that are open to the public. Make your voice heard at the first meeting on Tuesday, March 3rd from 6:00 - 8:00pm at South Philadelphia High School (2101 S Broad St.).

Join us for our third annual fundraiser - an elegant evening to gather, socialize, and support public education.  All proceeds benefit G.W. Childs and Project Recess.
A NICE Night is Saturday, April 4, 2020 at 7pm at Circle of Hope.  Join us for a three course dinner, drinks, music, and community engagement in support of Childs.  We are so close to our goal of completing the playground this fall and hope to see you there!

Early bird discounted tickets are on sale now!  Help spread the word by inviting your network to our Facebook Event.

Thank You to our early (and repeat!) supporters of A NICE Night!

Thank you to our Bronze Sponsor Center City Pediatrics and NICE Neighbor Sponsors Cobblestone Kids and OpenBox Athletics!  We hope you consider supporting these businesses, who have made a continued commitment to supporting our school!
